America Comes Home, Emma Willard School, Troy, NY, 2005.
A haunting memorial to American soldiers who fought in the Iraq War. A few weeks into the Iraq War, a photo of a female American soldier, with a leg missing, (blown off by an IED), shocked me; at that moment the war became real for me and I began to work. I made a banner America Comes Home modeled after posters that families put up to welcome home soldiers. I created an unbroken row of muslin figures, limp and shroud-like, representing American war dead. Also, I mounted monthly calendars, with one American flag for each soldier who had died that day, over the muslin figures.
